Kids and Money: Orman’s prepaid card might offer teens a chance to learn

Kids and Money: Orman’s prepaid card might offer teens a chance to learn
News from Richmond Times Dispatch:

Attention parents: Personal finance guru Suze Orman is promoting a new product that could help teenagers ease into the treacherous world of plastic.

The author and television commentator calls her credit card alternative the Approved Card.

It’s actually a prepaid card, which is similar to a debit card, except you don’t need a bank account or a spotless credit record.

Prepaid cards in general are simple to use: You can load money onto them and add cash when you’re running low. You can also make ATM withdrawals and deposits. But these cards typically come with high fees.

Orman is the latest celebrity to endorse and market a prepaid card. “Start your kids on the right track,” touts Orman in her promotional materials. “Teach them to handle money responsibly.”

To that extent, her product is way better than, say, the Kardashian sisters’ prepaid plastic, which was quickly pulled last year after public outcry over its fees.

The Approved Card has some appealing features for teens and college students. It has lower fees than many prepaid cards — as long as you use the card as Orman rightfully recommends.

The card comes with free identity theft protection and gives the cardholder free credit reports and scores for a year from TransUnion, one of the three main credit reporting organizations.

The Approved Card allows users to…………… continues on Richmond Times Dispatch

Money Pros: How to boost your credit score so you can refinance your mortgage …
News from New York Daily News:

The Money Pros are standing by to take your questions.

Q. I went to a lender to refinance my mortgage and was turned down. They said my credit score was about 30 points too low. What can I do to fix my credit score so I can refinance while rates are low?

A. There are many reasons why your credit score might be lower than it should be.

A big reason is delinquent accounts. If you have any late payments, collection accounts, tax liens, or judgments, it can reduce your credit score by hundreds of points.

Also, having new or young credit can decrease the average age of your accounts. Since being in the credit game a long time increases your score, it is best to have very old credit.

If you have a relative or friend with old credit you can be added to their account as an authorized user. You will not be responsible for the debt owed, but within six months the account will show up on your credit as an old a…………… continues on New York Daily News

Prosecutors: Hacker stole Seattleites’ credit card info for drug money

Prosecutors: Hacker stole Seattleites’ credit card info for drug money
News from Seattle Post Intelligencer:

A Seattle grand jury has indicted a Maryland man accused of hacking into the credit card systems of several Seattle businesses and using stolen funds to fuel his heroin addiction.

Currently in inpatient treatment for drug addition, 20-year-old Christopher A. Schroebel is facing federal hacking charges related to a string of high-tech thefts from Seattle restaurant-goers.

Federal prosecutors in Seattle contend Schroebel was selling credit card information through an online black market while also using the cards himself. A search of computer equipment tied to him allegedly uncovered information stolen from 4,800 credit cards, as well as dozens of malicious software programs meant to enable theft.

Asserting that Schroebel may have had help, Seattle Detective David Dunn said those responsible for the thefts planted malicious software – malware – into the computer systems at several businesses. The malware then relayed customers’ credit card informat…………… continues on Seattle Post Intelligencer

What happens to your credit score when a card gets closed?: Money Matters

What happens to your credit score when a card gets closed?: Money Matters
News from Plain Dealer:

Q: I have read your blogs and am trying to get a straight answer on something. Typically I hear that the credit bureaus want 10 years of timely payments, keeping balances at 60 percent of the limits (if you carried balances) and occasionally paying off cards can keep your score on the up and up.

What happens when the card issuer closes out the card due to inactivity? How does that impact your score?

– T.F., Lakewood

A: There’s a lot of misinformation in your statements, before we even get to your question.

First, the bureaus are looking for two to four years of timely payments, not 10. You actually could have had a ton of late payments eight or nine years ago and, by law (the Fair Credit Reporting Act,) they couldn’t be included on your credit report or factor into your score.

Send Credit Card Banks a Message, and Save a Lot of Money, Too

Send Credit Card Banks a Message, and Save a Lot of Money, Too
News from DailyFinance:

Mark your calendar: Dec. 11 is being publicized as “Balance Transfer Day,” with Americans urged to transfer their credit card balances from high-interest cards to low- or no-interest ones.

You might remember “Bank Transfer Day” awhile back, when people were encouraged to move their money out of the big banks and into smaller ones or credit unions. That movement was inspired by Bank of America’s (BAC) announcement that it planned to charge $ 5 per month for its customers to use debit cards. (Bank of America has since reversed itself, and peers such as Wells Fargo (WFC), US Bancorp (USB), JPMorgan Chase (JPM), SunTrust (

No-spending-limit credit cards can hurt credit score: Money Matters

No-spending-limit credit cards can hurt credit score: Money Matters
News from Plain Dealer:

Q: I’ve got a problem regarding the credit limit of one of my credit cards. I opened a Chase Freedom Visa card in 2008 at one of the local Chase branches. It had a $ 5,000 spending limit. I always monitor it closely online. When I’ve had a balance of $ 220, the remaining available credit was $ 4,780, for example.

About a year ago, I checked my credit report and noticed that my credit limit wasn’t listed on this card. I filled out a dispute with Experian and never heard back.

Why would Chase do this? I know credit scores are determined by the existing balance compared with the credit limit. I’m upset because my credit score is being penalized. What should I do?

– J.M., Lyndhurst

A: Your card has what’s called “no pre-set spending limit.” You are correct that this can hurt your credit score, depending on what limit is reported to the credit bureaus.

About one-third of our credit scores is based on the percenta…………… continues on Plain Dealer

Square Mobile Credit Card Reader Apps Makes a Great Simple Money Launderer

Square Mobile Credit Card Reader Apps Makes a Great Simple Money Launderer
News from Popular Science:

Square Mobile Payments Square

A simple tool that can turn any iPhone into a credit card machine can also be a simple way for crooks to steal cash, hackers demonstrated this week. Square can eliminate the hassle of money laundering.

Instead of stealing credit card numbers, buying items and then selling those items for cash, Square can deposit money directly into a user’s account. Computer security experts from a firm called Aperture Labs described the process at the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas.

Square enables mobile credit card payments by inserting a small dongle into the headphone jack of an iPhone or iPad. A user swipes the credit card’s magnetic stripe through a slit on the dongle, and credit card information is sent to the…………… continues on Popular Science

Money Matters: Your credit score now more accessible

Money Matters: Your credit score now more accessible
News from MYfoxLUBBOCK.COM:

Walking into a bank, few people are up-to-date on the shape of their credit.

“I’d say less than half will know their score before they come in and apply for a loan,” Paul Dannevik, Senior Vice President for Lubbock National Bank said.

A provision in the new financial reform law wants to make that number less mysterious to consumers. Now banks are responsible for providing you a free copy of your actual score under certain conditions. “Such as, in the event that they are declined for a loan. We give them an adverse action notice and a copy of their credit report and score,” Dannevik said.

Furthermore lenders at Lubbock National Bank sit down with applicants to explain the scoring system. “So they understand why they got the rate that they qualified for or why they were not approved for a loan,” Dannevik said.

Since your scores affect everything …………… continues on MYfoxLUBBOCK.COM
